Location: West Point Yacht Club, Phippsburg Directions
Skippers Meeting: 11:00.
First Race: 12:00
The West Point Yacht Clubs 1st Annual Regatta will be a low key, fun, moderately competitive (we hope) event. Our fleet of 3 are 15 years old, but still seem to go quite well! With enough interest… after the official regatta we hope to have time for a coed, dual crew fun race as well.
As of 6/25/09 it looks like about 7 boats, please keep them coming and please contact me with any questions! There will be a BBQ and awards afterwards, all welcome. The event is FREE! (Note: If planning on attending the BBQ though, please ask what you can bring!
. Thanks. )
Format:
3 race series. High score wins. 1 pt for finishing, 1 pt for each boat you beat.
Courses
Course numbers will be displayed by the Committee Boat immediately prior to each race. Green numbers signify that the mark will be left to starboard, red to port. (see course map below)
RULES: US Sailing Rules 2000-2012
Boats: Full Rig and Radial Welcome
Starting sequences: 5 minute, 4 minute, 3, 2 1, 30 sec, 20, 10, Start
Additional Rules:
Philosophy
It is the intent of the racing rules and WPYC that skippers sail with respect for other competitors and display good sportsmanship at all times. Skippers should avoid situations that lead to others fouling them, or to place other skippers in a position where they need to make emergency maneuvers to avoid collisions. All boats, including right of way boats, must make every attempt to avoid collisions. This means that appropriate warning hails are considered standard procedure at all times. Boats failing to avoid a collision may be penalized, per rule 14, Avoiding Contact.
Required Equipment
Each boat must carry U.S. Coast Guard mandated safety equipment, which includes a Type II life preserver for each person aboard.
General Recall
Repeated short horn blasts. A new starting sequence shall begin approximately one minute after the recall.
Penalties
The rules allow boats to exonerate themselves with a 720 degree turn in many areas of the rules, and a 360 degree turn for hitting a mark of the course. If a boat violates a rule, or when in doubt as to whether a boat has violated a rule, the skipper should position the boat clear from other boats at the first reasonable opportunity and do the appropriate turn(s) to exonerate the boat from further penalty, or retire from the race. If a collision between two boats occurs resulting in serious damage, the boat at fault shall retire from the race.
Protests
A boat wishing to protest another boat (for example if the other boat has not exonerated herself through penalty turns) shall inform the other boat at the first reasonable opportunity by hailing “protest”. The boat claiming the foul shall notify the Committee Boat, after it finishes, of its protest. A written report shall be made to the Chairman of the Protest Committee, or in his absence any other committee member before 3:00 p.m. that day. A protest committee member directly involved in the incident shall not serve on the judging panel for the hearing.
The committee member contacted concerning the protest shall be responsible for convening a protest hearing at the earliest practicable opportunity after the filing of the protest. Protests will be heard by a quorum of at least two members of the Protest Committee.
Safety
All boats should observe safety rules. Go to the assistance of a boat in trouble or a person overboard unless another boat has the situation under control.
Liability
Competitors participate in the races entirely at their own risk. See US Sailing Rule 4, Decision to Race. WPYC, its officers and agents will not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after racing. All decisions to start or continue any race shall be the sole responsibility of the skipper of each boat.
